How does it work?

Community groups propose projects for funding and residents vote on which should receive funding.

Plan the process

The 'classic' participatory budgeting model was developed in Brazil in the late 1980s. The process you're involved with may look a little different.

Click on 'projects' to find out more about how each participatory budget project works.

Temp

Collect ideas

People are invited to share their ideas for community projects to improve their local area.

Community projects look at local issues, like impoverished areas or large numbers of lonely people, and suggest ways to see improvements.

Temp

Develop proposals

The proposals might receive feedback or improvement suggestions before they're presented to the wider community.

Area meetings are typically held so that projects can be pitched and people can discuss why funding is needed.

Temp

Vote

The whole community is invited back to vote. This may take place on this platform, search 'polls' to find out more.

Temp

Fund winning projects

The chosen projects are then awarded funds to be put their ideas into practise. It gives real people real power over real money.

Temp

Implement winning projects

The winning projects with funds are then put into practise in the community.

Project teams may be set up to work together, or local events may take place to make the ideas a reality.

Temp

Monitor and evaluate the process

The people behind the participatory budgeting process that you're involved with will be keeping an eye on how it's going.

When the funds have been awarded and the projects up and running in the community, they may ask for feedback for how to improve the process next time.
